ASE A1 Engine Repair Test: Content Areas & Exam Traps

The ASE A1 Engine Repair test is about what you find with the engine apart — heads, block, valvetrain, lubrication and cooling — and the measurements that separate a reuse from a replace. It counts toward Master Automobile (A1–A8), and the hard questions hand you a reading (compression, leak-down, a bore measurement) and ask which failure it points to, not which part to name.

Cylinder head & valvetrain

Job
Seals combustion, holds valves, guides and seats; the camshaft opens the valves.
How it fails
Valve recession, guide wear, warped or cracked head, bad valve seal.
Symptom
Low compression that a wet test does NOT raise; oil consumption with clean rings.
Exam trap

Valve recession and guide wear both cause leakage — the measurement (stem-to-guide clearance, valve height), not the symptom, tells them apart.

Topics techs miss most

A1 punishes loose cause language. A few that show up over and over:

  • Wet vs. dry compression. If squirting oil in the cylinder raises compression, the leak is at the rings or wall. If it doesn’t change, you’re losing it past the valves or the head gasket. The test wants you to read that result, not guess.
  • Coolant loss with clean oil. That’s a combustion-side breach — a block (combustion-leak) test on the coolant confirms it. Coolant in the oil is a separate failure path.
  • Taper and out-of-round are two measurements. A bore can be in spec on one and out on the other, and the answer changes accordingly.
  • Low oil pressure is as often worn bearings bleeding pressure as it is a tired pump — the spec sheet decides.
Worked question · A1

A no-noise engine has low oil pressure, hot, at idle, but normal pressure at 2,000 rpm. Technician A says the oil pump is worn out. Technician B says excessive main/rod bearing clearance can bleed pressure at idle. Who is right?

Why

Both causes produce the same symptom, which is exactly why the test pairs them. Pressure that recovers with engine speed tells you the system can build pressure — so it’s a leak-down/clearance issue or a pump that can’t keep up at low speed. The honest answer is “measure both,” which is why Both is correct.

Exam trap: A worn pump and excessive bearing clearance BOTH show up as low hot-idle pressure that recovers with rpm. You can't pick between them from the symptom — you measure (pump clearances and Plastigage the bearings).
