ASE A1 Practice Test — Free Engine Repair Questions
A1 practice only helps if it tests mechanical engine diagnosis the way the exam does: a measurement, a symptom, and one answer that survives the reasoning. A1 is about what you find with the engine apart — compression and leak-down numbers, valvetrain and bearing wear, head-gasket failure paths — not driveability. What the A1 test actually asks
The single most common A1 mistake is studying it like a driveability test. Sensors, fuel trim, and OBD-II live on A8 Engine Performance — A1 is the mechanical side: blocks, heads, valvetrain, lubrication and cooling, and the measurements that tell you which one failed. The table below is the content breakdown straight from the ASE task list, with relative weight so you study the heavy areas first.

Where A1 candidates lose points
Three patterns sink otherwise-competent techs on A1:
- Skipping the test result to the part. A1 questions almost never say “the rings are worn.” They hand you a cylinder-balance, compression, or leak-down result and ask what it means. The leak-down test in particular localizes the failure by where the air goes — intake valve, exhaust valve, rings, or head gasket — and that single distinction shows up repeatedly. Read the measurement, then name the part.
- Mixing up coolant-in-oil with combustion-in-coolant. These are two different head-gasket / casting failures with two different tests. A milky oil and a block test that detects combustion gas in the coolant are not the same finding, and the exam separates them deliberately.
- Conflating block measurements. Cylinder taper and out-of-round are distinct measurements with distinct service limits and fixes; same for valve recession versus guide wear, which mimic each other until you measure. The number, not the symptom, is the answer.
A worked A1 question
An engine has a steady miss and white smoke from the tailpipe at idle, with no external coolant leak. A cooling-system pressure test holds, but a block tester (chemical, drawn through the coolant) changes color. Technician A says a head gasket leaking combustion into the coolant. Technician B says worn valve guides pulling oil. Who is right?

Read the two pieces of evidence together. White, sweet-smelling smoke is coolant entering the combustion chamber, not oil — oil burns blue-gray. The block tester drawing a sample through the coolant and changing color confirms combustion gas is crossing into the cooling system. A pressure test can still hold because the leak path opens under combustion pressure, not static cooling-system pressure. That points squarely at a head gasket (or a cracked head/block) breaching between a cylinder and a coolant passage. Worn valve guides would give oil consumption and blue smoke and would not move a combustion-detection block tester. Technician A is right.
Exam trap: White smoke and a 'good' pressure test tempt you toward valve guides, but guide wear pulls OIL (blue-gray smoke) past the seals — it doesn't turn a combustion-leak block tester. The chemical block tester changing color is direct evidence of combustion gas reaching the coolant: a head gasket, cracked head, or cracked block. Match the smoke color and the test together — white/sweet smoke + a positive block test is coolant being burned, not oil.

If your misses cluster in one area — say head and valvetrain measurement, or block specs — that area is your next study block, not the whole test. Aim to get each area consistently above about 80% across a few attempts before you register.
