Is a specific topic on the test?
Before you spend an evening on something, check whether it’s actually tested — and on which exam. This searches the task lists for all 15 covered tests at once, so it also tells you which code owns a topic. Type a part or concept (abs sensor, fuel trim, rotor, evap, ball joint):
General Engine Diagnosis
Noise, leaks, oil consumption, compression, cooling and the "is it worth tearing down" call.
Trap: A cylinder-balance or compression/leak-down result points to the failed part — read the test, don't guess the part.
Cylinder Head & Valve Train
Heads, valves, guides, seats, camshafts, timing components and measuring.
Trap: Valve recession and guide wear mimic each other; the measurement, not the symptom, separates them.
Engine Block
Block, crank, bearings, pistons, rings, cylinder measuring and machining limits.
Trap: Taper and out-of-round are different measurements with different fixes — don't conflate them.
Lubrication & Cooling
Oil pumps, pressure, coolant flow, thermostats, head gaskets and overheating diagnosis.
Trap: Combustion gas in the coolant vs. coolant in the oil are two different failures with two different tests.
Fuel, Electrical, Ignition & Exhaust (mechanical side)
The mechanical interfaces — manifolds, basic sensors, exhaust restriction — not full driveability.
General Transmission Diagnosis
Road test, fluid condition, pressure tests, electronic codes and shift-quality complaints.
Trap: A pressure-test reading rules areas in or out before you ever pull the pan — that's the tested logic.
In-Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
Service, external leaks, linkage, electronic controls, valve-body and cooler work in the car.
Off-Vehicle (Overhaul)
Teardown, clutch/band/gear-train, pump, valve body, endplay and reassembly specs.
Trap: Endplay and clutch clearance failures present as shift problems — the spec sheet is the answer.
Clutch Diagnosis & Repair
Slip, chatter, pedal/linkage, hydraulics and release-bearing complaints.
Trap: Slip under load vs. chatter on engagement point to different components — match the symptom to the part.
Transmission/Transaxle Diagnosis & Repair
Gear noise, jumping out of gear, synchronizer and bearing diagnosis, in/out of car.
Drive Shaft & Half Shaft, U-/CV-Joints
Vibration, clicking on turns, runout, phasing and joint service.
Trap: Clicking on turns is a CV joint; vibration at speed is usually balance/runout — different diagnostics.
Differential / Drive Axle
Ring-and-pinion setup, backlash, gear pattern, limited-slip and bearing preload.
Four-Wheel / All-Wheel Drive
Transfer cases, viscous/clutch couplings and engagement faults.
Steering Systems
Steering columns, manual/power racks and gears, electric power steering and linkage.
Trap: Memory steer vs. torque steer vs. wander each point at a different component — the complaint narrows it.
Suspension Systems
Springs, struts, shocks, control arms, ball joints, bushings and electronic suspension.
Trap: A worn ball joint and a worn control-arm bushing both cause clunk — the loaded vs. unloaded check separates them.
Wheel Alignment Diagnosis & Adjustment
Camber, caster, toe, SAI, included angle, thrust angle and pull/wear diagnosis.
Trap: A pull follows the most positive camber / least caster; tire wear reads back to a specific angle.
Wheels & Tires
Tire wear patterns, balance, runout, TPMS and vibration diagnosis.
Hydraulic System Diagnosis & Repair
Master cylinder, lines, valves, fluid, bleeding and the largest single area on the test.
Trap: A sinking pedal at rest with no external leak is internal master-cylinder bypass — not air in the lines.
Disc Brake Diagnosis & Repair
Pads, calipers, rotors, runout, thickness variation and pulsation.
Trap: Pulsation under braking is rotor thickness variation — say "thickness variation," not "warped rotors."
Drum Brake Diagnosis & Repair
Shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware, adjustment and drum machining limits.
Power-Assist Units
Vacuum and hydraulic boosters, check valves and assist diagnosis.
Trap: A hard pedal with good hydraulics is a boost problem — test vacuum and the check valve, not the calipers.
Miscellaneous (Wheel Bearings, Parking Brake, Electrical)
Wheel bearings, parking-brake systems and brake-related warning lights.
Electronic Brake Control (ABS / TCS / ESC)
Wheel-speed sensors, modulator, traction and stability control diagnosis.
Trap: An ABS light with a clean scan often traces to a wheel-speed signal/air-gap fault, not the controller.
General Electrical/Electronic Diagnosis
Ohm's law, circuit testing, voltage drop, wiring diagrams and the diagnostic logic the test loves.
Trap: A voltage-drop test finds resistance a continuity check passes — that distinction is most of the hard questions.
Battery & Starting System
Battery testing, state of charge, starter draw and no-crank diagnosis.
Trap: State of charge and capacity are different measurements — an open-circuit voltage isn't a load test.
Charging System
Alternator output, regulation, ripple and charging-circuit voltage drop.
Lighting Systems
Headlamps, signals, brake/back-up lights and lighting-circuit faults.
Instrument Cluster, Body & Accessory Electrical
Gauges, wipers, power accessories, horn and body-control inputs/outputs.
Networks & Module Communication
CAN/serial-data basics, module communication faults and U-codes.
Trap: A bus fault drops multiple unrelated modules at once — that pattern is the clue, not a single component.
A/C System Diagnosis & Repair
Performance testing, compressor, condenser, evaporator and the refrigerant cycle.
Trap: High-side/low-side gauge readings read back to a specific fault — learn the pressure patterns, not just parts.
Refrigeration System Component Diagnosis
Compressor, clutch, metering device, accumulator/receiver-drier and lines.
Heating, Ventilation & Engine Cooling
Heater core, blend doors, coolant flow and the cooling system's HVAC overlap.

Trap: A blend-door actuator fault mimics a refrigerant problem — verify air-side before you condemn the A/C.
Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling & Handling
Recovery/recharge procedure, identification, contamination and EPA 609 handling.
Trap: EPA Section 609 governs MVAC refrigerant handling — procedure questions test the rules, not just the gauges.
General Engine Diagnosis
No-start, misfire, performance complaints, mechanical vs. control-side isolation.
Trap: A mechanical fault (low compression, valve timing) can set driveability codes — rule out mechanical first.
Ignition System
Coils, plugs, timing, misfire diagnosis and secondary-ignition analysis.
Fuel, Air Induction & Exhaust
Fuel delivery, injectors, fuel trim, induction leaks and exhaust restriction.
Trap: Positive long-term fuel trim points to a lean cause (vacuum leak/low fuel) — read trim before swapping sensors.
Emission Control Systems
EGR, EVAP, PCV, secondary air and catalyst diagnosis.
Trap: An EVAP small-leak code is a sealed-system test result, not a "replace the gas cap" reflex.
Computerized Controls & OBD-II
Sensors, actuators, monitors, readiness, mode $06 data and scan-tool diagnosis.
Trap: A code names the circuit/condition, not the bad part — the freeze-frame and data confirm the cause.
I/M Failure Diagnosis
Emissions-test failures, readiness monitors and repair verification.
General Engine Diagnosis

Trap: Smoke color reads back to a cause — black (fuel/air), blue (oil), white (coolant/unburned fuel).
