Two things to take from that split. First, General Transmission Diagnosis is where the road test, fluid check, pressure tests, and electronic codes live — it’s the gate the rest of the test depends on. Second, the Off-Vehicle (Overhaul) area is the single biggest block, but most of its questions are about specs and clearances, not raw memorization. Practice the diagnosis logic that decides whether to tear down, then the overhaul questions stop feeling random.

Worked A2 questions

1. Soft, slipping upshifts across all gears. A vehicle slips and shifts late in every forward range. Fluid is full and not burnt. Your first diagnostic move is to:

  • Answer: Run a line-pressure test. Slipping in every gear points to a system-wide pressure problem, not one failed clutch pack. Low line pressure starves every apply circuit at once. Hook up a pressure gauge and compare to spec across the range before you pull anything — a low reading sends you toward the pump, pressure regulator, or a pressure-control solenoid, not a teardown.

2. Harsh 1-2 shift only, no codes, hydraulic-controlled unit. One shift bangs; the rest are normal and the scan tool is clean. Most likely area?

  • Answer: The hydraulic shift circuit for that shift — valve body / accumulator, not an electronic fault. On a hydraulically controlled shift with no stored codes, the controls are doing their job; the firmness is being set hydraulically. A stuck valve or a failed accumulator piston/spring lets that apply hit hard. Reading “no codes” as “nothing wrong” is the trap — the electronics never saw a fault because the problem is downstream in the hydraulics.

3. No 3-4 shift, electronically controlled transmission. The transmission won’t complete the top shift and a shift-solenoid code is stored. Before condemning the solenoid you should:

  • Answer: Verify the solenoid circuit and command with a scan tool, not just swap the part. A shift-solenoid code names the circuit and condition, not a confirmed bad solenoid. Check that the controller is commanding the solenoid, then confirm the solenoid actually responds — a wiring, ground, or connector fault sets the same code. Electronic-control questions reward proving the command-and-response path, which is exactly the distinction A2 tests against a “replace the solenoid” reflex.

Technician A says to road test and run a line-pressure test before any disassembly. Technician B says to pull the pan and inspect the clutches first since slip means worn clutches. Who is right?

Why

Walk the sequence. The customer’s word “slip” describes what they feel, not what failed. Slip that shows up under load but disappears in light driving, with clean and full fluid, fits a line-pressure or apply problem — the system isn’t holding enough pressure when torque is high. A road test verifies the condition, and a line-pressure test reads back whether the pressure is actually there. Both happen with the transmission in the car. Pulling the pan and condemning clutches first skips the cheap tests that could have caught a solenoid, filter, or pressure-regulator fault. Technician A is right — confirm the complaint and check pressure before any disassembly.

Exam trap: A complaint of 'slip' is not a diagnosis — it's a symptom, and several different faults produce it. Slip only under load with good fluid often points to low line pressure or a TCC/apply problem, both of which a road test and a pressure gauge will reveal with the unit still in the car. Tearing down clutches first can mean overhauling a transmission whose real fault was a pressure-control solenoid or a clogged filter. A2 results read by area, not as one score. If your misses cluster in General Diagnosis — road test, fluid condition, line pressure, electronic codes — fix that first, because it’s the area that decides whether the overhaul questions even apply to a given vehicle. If you’re solid on diagnosis but losing points in Off-Vehicle work, drill the endplay, clutch-clearance, and reassembly specs; those questions are answered by the spec sheet, not by guessing the part. Aim to get each area consistently above about 80% across a few attempts before you register.
