The topics A4 candidates miss most

Three families of questions account for most wrong answers on A4, and all three are confusion traps rather than knowledge gaps:

  • Memory steer vs. torque steer vs. wander. These three steering complaints feel similar to a customer but point at different components. Memory steer — the wheel pulls back to where you last turned it — is a binding component (a tight upper bearing, a seized strut mount, a binding ball joint). Torque steer — a pull only under hard acceleration — traces to unequal driveaxle angles or a half-shaft issue on a front-driver, not the steering gear. Wander — the car won’t track straight and needs constant correction — is usually a worn linkage or low caster. The complaint narrows the system before you touch anything.
  • Worn vs. damaged, and how you load the check. A worn ball joint and a worn control-arm bushing both throw a clunk over bumps. The way you separate them is loading: support the suspension so the joint is loaded or unloaded per the service procedure, then measure axial/radial play against spec. “Worn” is a measurement against a wear limit; “damaged” is a torn boot, bent arm, or collapsed bushing you can see. The exam rewards the measured answer, not the eyeball guess.
  • Reading wear and pull back to an alignment angle. A pull follows the most positive camber and the least caster. Tire wear reads back to a specific angle: a feather edge is a toe problem, one-sided shoulder wear is camber, and a cupped/scalloped pattern is usually worn dampers or a balance/runout issue, not alignment at all. And the order of operations matters — ride height comes before alignment numbers, because a sagging spring throws every angle off and “correcting” the alignment on a car sitting low just hides the real fault.

Worked A4 questions

1. Steering pull, no pulling under acceleration. A front-wheel-drive car pulls steadily to the right at a constant cruise, with no change when you accelerate. Alignment shows right-front camber more positive than left and caster nearly equal side to side. What’s the most likely cause of the pull?

  • Answer: The unequal camber. A vehicle pulls toward the side with the most positive camber (and toward the side with the least caster). Because caster is nearly equal here, the camber split is doing the pulling. The “no change under acceleration” detail rules out torque steer. Set camber to spec and equal side to side before chasing anything else.

2. Clunk over bumps. A customer reports a clunk over bumps from the left front. You find play when you check the lower ball joint, but the boot is intact. What’s the correct call?

  • Answer: Measure the ball-joint play against the manufacturer’s wear limit with the joint loaded or unloaded per the procedure. Feeling “play” is not a diagnosis — a follower-type joint has some designed movement. The exam wants the measured result against spec, taken with the suspension loaded correctly. Condemn the joint only when the measurement exceeds the limit. An intact boot means “worn,” not “damaged.”

3. Tire wear. The right front tire shows a sharp feathered edge across the tread, sharp on one side of each rib. Which angle is most likely out?

  • Answer: Toe. A feathered, saw-tooth edge across the tread is the classic toe-wear signature, because the tire is being dragged slightly sideways as it rolls. Camber wear is one-sided shoulder wear; cupping points at worn dampers or a balance/runout problem. Confirm toe on the rack and check for a bent steering or suspension component that pushed it out.

A vehicle came in for a complaint that the steering wheel 'stays where you put it' — after a turn it doesn't return to center on its own and the car drifts in the direction of the last turn. An alignment was just performed and all angles read within spec. Technician A says the alignment is fine, so the problem is a binding component in the steering or suspension (memory steer). Technician B says low caster is causing poor return, so the car needs more caster. Who is right?

Why

Walk the complaint. “Stays where you put it” and “drifts toward the last turn” is the textbook description of memory steer, where something in the steering or suspension is binding and storing the input instead of letting the wheels self-center. Technician B’s caster theory would be reasonable — low caster does reduce return — except the alignment was just confirmed within spec, which takes caster off the table. With geometry verified, the cause has to be mechanical bind: a seized strut mount, a tight upper bearing, a binding ball joint, or a corroded steering-shaft joint. Technician A is right.

Exam trap: Low caster does hurt steering return — but the alignment was just verified within spec, so caster is not the variable here. The describe-it-back symptom (the wheel HOLDING the last input and the car drifting that way) is memory steer, which is a binding/preloaded component: a tight strut mount or upper bearing, a seized ball joint, an over-tightened or corroded steering-shaft joint, or a binding tie-rod end. The exam is testing whether you can separate a geometry problem (caster) from a mechanical-bind problem (memory steer) when the alignment numbers are already good.

Reading your result

Score the worked set and the quick check by area, not as one number. If your misses cluster in alignment — pull direction, angle-to-wear, the ride-height-first rule — that’s your next study block, not the whole test. If they cluster in suspension, drill the loaded vs. unloaded checks and the worn-vs-damaged distinction until the measured answer is automatic. Get each area consistently above about 80% across a few attempts before you register.
