ASE G1 Maintenance & Light Repair Test: What's on It
The ASE G1 test certifies entry-level maintenance and light repair across the whole car — engine, drivetrain, suspension and steering, brakes, and electrical/HVAC — rather than mastery of one system. It is a standalone certification and does not count toward Master Automobile Technician (A1–A8). Because it spans every system but stays at maintenance depth, G1 rewards safe service judgment and breadth, and it trips up techs who over-think it like a master-level diagnosis exam.

Notice the shape of the table: the weight is spread fairly evenly, with brakes and electrical/HVAC carrying the most. There’s no single dominant area to lean on the way hydraulics dominates A5. That’s the defining feature of G1 — you can’t skip a system. A tech who’s strong on engines but never touches suspension will leave points on the table, because the test samples a little from everywhere.
The other half of that breadth is depth: each area stays at the maintenance-and-light-repair level. You’re tested on inspection, service, fluids, basic component replacement, and knowing when a job is beyond light repair — not on overhauls or composite-vehicle diagnosis.

A common point of confusion: G1 is not one of the eight tests that build Master Automobile Technician. Master is A1 through A8. G1 lives alongside that ladder as its own certification, and for many techs it’s the first one they earn because it maps to entry-level shop work.
There’s a second route to G1 worth knowing. At an ASE Education Foundation–accredited training program, a student who passes all eight individual automobile entry-level (xELR/MLR) area tests and then completes six months of qualifying work experience is awarded the professional G1 credential. Where techs lose points on G1
The trap with G1 isn’t that the material is hard — it’s that experienced techs overthink it. The test wants the safe, standard-procedure answer, and it leans on the maintenance details people skim past because they “already know” the system. These are the patterns that catch people:

The last row is the meta-trap. G1 deliberately includes “this is past maintenance and light repair” situations to see whether you recognize the boundary of the credential. Picking the elaborate diagnostic answer when the test wants “inspect, document, and refer” is how strong techs talk themselves out of points.
Get the cause language right, too. “Rotor thickness variation,” not “warped rotor.” “Underinflation,” not “bad tire.” The maintenance interval and the torque spec, not your gut feel. That precision is the same habit the deeper A-tests reward, and it’s what our ASE study guide drills.

During a tire rotation a customer says the steering wheel shakes at highway speed. The tires show even tread and the brakes feel normal. As a maintenance-light-repair tech, what's the right next step?

A vibration that shows up at highway speed and goes away at low speed is the signature of a rotating-mass imbalance — a wheel that needs balancing or a tire/wheel with runout. Worn struts cause a ride/handling complaint, not a speed-specific shimmy; rotor thickness variation shows up under braking, which the customer says is normal; alignment problems show up as a pull or a wear pattern, and the tread here is even. The maintenance-level move is to balance and check runout before reaching for anything bigger. G1 rewards starting with the simplest test that fits the symptom.
Exam trap: A shake at highway speed with even tread and normal brakes points at balance/runout — a maintenance check — not struts (a ride complaint), rotors (a braking pulsation), or alignment (a pull/wear complaint). Match the symptom to the cheapest correct test first.
A study plan built for breadth
Because no single area dominates, the worst G1 strategy is to camp on your strongest system. Spread your time across all five areas, spend the most where you’re weakest, and drill the maintenance specifics — fluid types and intervals, torque specs, tire wear patterns, inspection checklists — that your daily work lets you glide past.
